Lab results
I went to Karmanos at 8 a.m. this morning and had my labs drawn through my softcell catheter. It sure is nice not getting poked in my arms. The nurse changed my dressing to opsite to see if I can tolerate it better than the tegaderm. We had to wait for an hour to get my lab results. My wbc dropped to 0.1 so I still have to wear a mask. My platelets are now 28. I have to go back again tomorrow and if my platelets are 20 or below I will need a platelet transfusion. I am at risk for bleeding so I have to be careful not bump myself or fall.

- I am 63 years old and was diagnosed with multiple myeloma on Feb 15,2005 at age 57. I was undergoing an autologous stem cell transplant.(SCT) I had my stem cells harvested in May 06 but due to complications I did not, nor do I plan to have the transplant. Added note: NEVER say NEVER; I am going to complete my sct starting Feb 15th 2011. I worked as a RN until going on disability in Dec. 04. I am the one with black top on. I had auto pscts in 8/03 and 12/03. Still doing fine. 5x week 50mg Thal for maintenance. No m-spike and IGG stable at 1100 or so.
When they yank the catheter out, it hurts like the dickens. During my second sct, I put EMLA on the area of the access point and above an inch or so an hour before and covered it with the dressing. Didn't feel a thing that time.
I have been using EMLA on my port for almost 5 years.
